A Catskill resident in the 1970s and 1980s, Jones has long been active in Catskill issues, with his extensive work on the Hudson River clean-up as its centerpiece.  Jones co-chaired from 2000 to 2004 the Friends of the Hudson coalition, consisting of over fifty groups dedicated to the clean-up of the hundreds of tons of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) dumped in the River over the last decades by the General Electric Corporation, wrote extensively on the issue and both lobbied for and publicized the fight against this deadly pollutant.
